Visiting Charles Bridge: tips

Charles Bridge costs nothing and never closes, which makes it the easiest sight in Prague and the easiest one to get wrong. Most bad visits come down to three things: the wrong hour, the wrong exchange office and the wrong idea of what needs a ticket.

The bridge at dawn costs nothing and needs no booking. It is the best version of it.

Booking choice: The canal cruise under Charles Bridge, from $25 per person. Check dates Tour details

These are the practical points we would tell a friend before their first walk across: what is free, what is worth paying for, how to arrive, what to watch out for and how to fit it all into half a day.

Prices are 2026 figures from Prague City Tourism, Prague Venice and the PID transport tariff, and the exchange rules come from the Czech National Bank, all checked on 10 October 2026.

The quick answer

You never need a ticket for Charles Bridge: it is a free public footbridge, open 24 hours. You pay only for extras: a bridge tower (250 CZK, 340 CZK for both), the canal cruise under the arches (550 CZK, museum included), or a guided tour. Go before 8:00 or after 22:00, keep your bag zipped, and never change money at a street booth without checking the rate.

Do you need a ticket for Charles Bridge?

No. The bridge is a free public footbridge, open day and night all year. Anything sold as a “Charles Bridge ticket” is a ticket for something else.

There is no gate, no turnstile and no timed entry. You walk on at Křižovnické náměstí in the Old Town or at the bottom of Mostecká in the Lesser Town and walk off at the other end. Tour companies sell products with “Charles Bridge” in the name, and they are real, but what you pay for is a tower, a boat, a museum or a guide.

That is the honest way to read every listing on this site: ask what the bridge alone does not give you. A tower gives you height. A boat gives you the arches. A guide gives you the stories. If you want none of those, you need nothing but good timing.

How do you get to Charles Bridge?

On foot from Old Town Square in about 10 minutes, from metro line A Staroměstská in about 5, or by tram to either end.

Old Town end. From Old Town Square, follow Karlova street, the twisting lane of the old Royal Route, to Křižovnické náměstí: about 10 minutes, and crowded by day. From the Staroměstská station on metro line A it is about five minutes south along the river. Trams along the embankment stop at Karlovy lázně, just before the bridge tower.

Lesser Town end. Tram 22 stops at Malostranské náměstí, three minutes above the bridge down Mostecká. The Malostranská metro and tram stop is about ten minutes away on foot.

Tickets work across trams, metro and buses. A 30-minute paper ticket costs 39 CZK in 2026 and a 24-hour ticket 150 CZK; the PID Lítačka app is a little cheaper (36 and 140 CZK). From the Lesser Town end, the route up to the castle starts right at the towers.

How do you avoid the crowds on Charles Bridge?

Go before 8:00 or after 22:00. At midday, look at the bridge from a tower or a boat instead of walking it.

The pattern does not change much through the year: quiet at dawn, filling from about 10:00, packed until early evening from April to October, quieter again late at night. Winter mornings are the emptiest of all, and in December sunrise comes at about 7:55, so no painful alarm is needed.

If you can only come at midday, cross once, briskly, and spend your time elsewhere: down on Kampa under the western arches, up the Old Town Bridge Tower, or on the water. The canal cruise leaves from under the bridge every 10 to 15 minutes and does not care what time it is. The best time guide has sunrise times by month.

Mid-afternoon in season: you can cross, but stopping means stepping out of the flow.

Are there pickpockets and scams on Charles Bridge?

Pickpockets work the crowds, as on any busy sight. The bigger money trap is street exchange offices, and Czech law gives you three hours to undo a bad deal.

The bridge is lit, watched by cameras and patrolled. Theft is opportunistic: a phone in a back pocket, an open bag while you photograph Nepomuk. Wear the bag in front in the crowds and keep the phone in your hand or zipped away.

Exchange offices are the real trap in the old centre. Booths advertise “0% commission” and then apply a terrible rate. Since 1 April 2019 Czech law lets you cancel an exchange within three hours, at the same office, and get your money back; the right covers up to the equivalent of €1,000, and the office must print the address cnb.cz/exchange on your receipt. Better still, skip exchange booths: pay by card, which is accepted almost everywhere, or take crowns from a bank ATM.

When a card machine or ATM asks whether to charge you in your home currency or in crowns, choose crowns. The home-currency option comes with the machine's own exchange rate, and it is rarely in your favour.

Is Charles Bridge accessible for wheelchairs and strollers?

The deck is level but cobbled, so wheelchairs and strollers manage it slowly. The towers, the Kampa steps and the canal boats are not accessible.

Both ends of the bridge join the street at the same level, and the deck itself has no steps, but the paving is rough cobble with gaps. Push a stroller with big wheels, and expect a bumpy ride in a manual wheelchair. The stairs down to Kampa at the western end have no ramp; reach Kampa through the Lesser Town streets instead.

The bridge towers are not barrier-free, with narrow stairs and no lift. The canal boats are reached by stairs into the old harbour and are listed as not suitable for wheelchair users. The big river boats from Dvořákovo nábřeží ask that wheelchairs be foldable and that passengers can manage a few steps. For a wheelchair user the best view of the bridge is from the Kampa riverbank or the Old Town embankment at Novotného lávka.

How long do you need for Charles Bridge?

Ten minutes to cross, half an hour to enjoy it, half a day with a tower, a boat and the walk to the castle.

The bridge is 516 metres long. Walking straight across takes under ten minutes; with the statues and photos, 20 to 30. Add 30 to 45 minutes for a tower, 45 minutes plus the museum for the boat, and two to three hours for the castle. A first-day guided walk is a good way to string it together: the Old Town and Charles Bridge walking tour ($21, about three hours) runs from the Powder Gate through the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter and across the bridge. Jason A, on Viator in October 2026: “The perfect tour if you don't have much time.”
