Booking choice: The canal cruise under Charles Bridge, from $25 per person. Check dates Tour details
Charles Bridge does not close for winter. It stays free and open around the clock, and the cold months are the only time you can stand in the middle at 11:00 and still see the cobbles. What changes is everything around it: the towers keep shorter hours, the light goes early, and from late November the Old Town fills with Christmas markets.
This post covers October 2026 to March 2027. For the evergreen advice on crowds read our best time to visit guide; for the big December dates see the Christmas markets post and the New Year's Eve post.
The quick answer
The bridge is free and open 24 hours all winter. Both bridge towers open 10:00 to 18:00 in October and November, 10:00 to 19:30 in December and 10:00 to 18:00 from January to March, with shorter hours on the Christmas and New Year holidays (the 2026-27 holiday hours were not yet published on 10 October 2026). Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, after which sunset comes before 17:00 until early February.
When are the Charles Bridge towers open in autumn and winter 2026-27?
Daily from 10:00, closing at 18:00 except in December, when they stay open until 19:30; holiday hours for Christmas 2026 are not out yet.
Both towers are run by Prague City Tourism and keep the same seasonal hours. The Old Town Bridge Tower page on prague.eu lists 10:00 to 18:00 for October and November, 10:00 to 19:30 for December, and 10:00 to 18:00 again from January to March. The adult ticket is 250 CZK for the Old Town tower, 200 CZK for the Lesser Town tower and 340 CZK for both.
The useful winter detail is the Early Bird rule: 50% off in the first hour after opening, every day except 25 December and 1 January. In winter that first hour is 10:00 to 11:00, which is also when the light is low and golden from the south-east. Last season the towers opened 10:00 to 14:30 on 24 December, 11:00 to 17:30 on Christmas Day, 10:00 to 16:00 on New Year's Eve and 11:00 to 18:00 on 1 January. On 10 October 2026 the page still showed those 2025-26 exceptions, so treat them as a guide, not a promise.
If you would rather book online with free cancellation, the combined towers ticket covers both. One guest, Maryam, explains how it works on the day: "Mobile ticket was scanned then they gave me a paper one to use at both towers." The official price at the tower desk is lower; our tower tickets guide compares the two.

How short are the days on Charles Bridge in winter?
Sunset falls from about 18:10 in mid-October to about 16:00 in mid-December, so the blue hour on the bridge comes before most people finish lunch.
Central European Summer Time ends on Sunday 25 October 2026. The evening before, the sun sets over the castle at about 17:50; the evening after, at about 16:50. From then until early February, dusk on the bridge comes earlier than the towers close, which is the best thing about winter here: you can climb a tower in daylight and come down to the lamps being lit.
Sunrise works the other way. In mid-December it comes at about 7:55, behind the Old Town Bridge Tower, so the famous empty-bridge sunrise needs no alarm at 5:00 as it does in June. A winter weekday at 8:00 is close to empty. By 11:00 there are people, but nothing like the summer crush.
Fog is the season's other gift. On still, cold mornings, mostly from late October to February, mist sits on the Vltava and the statues come out of it one by one. It lifts by late morning on most days. Frost is the hazard: the cobbles on the bridge and on the steps down to Kampa get slippery, and shoes with grip help.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| 15 October 2026 | 7:24 | 18:12 |
| 26 October 2026 (after the clock change) | 6:41 | 16:50 |
| 15 November 2026 | 7:15 | 16:18 |
| 15 December 2026 | 7:54 | 16:00 |
| 15 January 2027 | 7:56 | 16:28 |
| 15 February 2027 | 7:14 | 17:20 |

What is on around Charles Bridge from October 2026 to March 2027?
Signal Festival in mid-October, the Christmas markets from late November, then Christmas and New Year; the rest of the winter is quiet.
The first date is close. Signal, Prague's festival of light art, runs from 15 to 18 October 2026, with a free programme in public space and a paid indoor zone, Signal INSIDE, at 340 CZK a day or 440 CZK for all four days, per the Prague 1 listing. One installation is in the entrance hall of the Law Faculty, a short walk up the river from the bridge.
The Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square open on Saturday 28 November 2026 and run to 6 January 2027, with the tree on Old Town Square planned to be lit on the opening day. Karlova street, the lane from Old Town Square to the bridge, is the walk between the two. Then come Christmas Eve, when Prague goes quiet early, and New Year's Eve, when the bridge is one of the most crowded places in the city at midnight.
Czech public holidays in the season are 28 October, 17 November, 24 to 26 December and 1 January. The tower page lists special hours only for the Christmas and New Year days, so expect normal hours on 28 October and 17 November.

Is a river cruise worth it in winter?
Yes, if you pick a short one: the canal cruise is 45 minutes, serves mulled wine in winter and adds the Charles Bridge Museum for the time when it gets dark.
The canal cruise under Charles Bridge leaves from the Old Town end every 15 minutes, passes under the arches and turns into the Čertovka, the narrow millrace on Kampa island. The listing includes beer, lemonade, tea, coffee and, in winter, mulled wine, plus gingerbread, and a ticket to the Charles Bridge Museum next to the pier. Guests report the commentary is a recording on headphones, not a live guide.
The museum is the winter bonus. Its own site gives winter hours (October to April) of 10:00 to 18:00 daily, which makes it a dry hour at the end of a cold afternoon. Dress for the boat: the wooden boats are small, and on the water it feels several degrees colder than on the bridge. Our river cruise guide compares the canal boats with the bigger evening cruises.

45 minutes under the arches and up the Devil's Channel, with a hot drink in winter and the Charles Bridge Museum included. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates Tour detailsHow do you get the most from a winter day on the bridge?
Cross at 8:00, climb a tower at 10:00 for half price, and come back after 16:30 for the lamps and the floodlit castle.
That order uses every advantage of the season. The early crossing is close to private. The first tower hour costs half, and the gallery is empty at that time. After lunch the light has gone flat and the bridge is at its busiest, so that is the time for the castle, the museum or a cafe in the Lesser Town. By 16:30 in December the lamps are on, the castle is lit, and the walk back towards the Old Town tower is the classic winter picture.
Two cautions. Pickpockets work the bridge in every season, and in winter the crowds bunch at the two ends, around the towers. And snow is a gift, not a plan: Prague gets more grey and drizzle than white, so book flexible tickets and watch the forecast. For the walk up to the castle on a short day, see Charles Bridge to Prague Castle.
