New Year's Eve on Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge is one of the places Prague crowds into at midnight on 31 December. The city has not run an official fireworks show for years, and new rules from 2026 make the centre quieter still.

Thursday 31 December 2026 will look much like the last few New Year's Eves in Prague: a huge, informal crowd on Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square and Charles Bridge, no official display, and plenty of illegal rockets anyway. What is new is the law. Prague's councillors passed a new pyrotechnics decree in June 2026 and widened it in September.

The rest of the night's details, from street closures to the metro timetable, are usually published in the last week of December. We say below what is decided, what is past practice, and what is still open.

The quick answer

On 10 October 2026 Prague had announced no fireworks show, light show or videomapping for New Year's Eve 2026; the city has held none since the videomapping that welcomed 2020. Amateur fireworks are banned all year in the historic centre, on and within 50 metres of the river, and in 35 of the city's 57 districts, including Prague 1. The bridge itself does not close; in past years the streets around it were shut to traffic from about 23:00 to 01:00.

Will there be fireworks in Prague on New Year's Eve 2026?

Not from the city: no official fireworks or light show was announced by 10 October 2026, and none has taken place since 2020.

Prague used to fire a big display over the Vltava, and for the start of 2020 it replaced it with videomapping on Wenceslas Square. After that the city stopped. In December 2022 ČTK reported that the city would hold neither fireworks nor videomapping, and in December 2025 the national tourism portal said Prague, "as in previous years", planned no New Year fireworks, videomapping or similar event (our translation).

For 2026 nothing has been announced either way. Prague held municipal elections in October 2026, so any change would come from the new city leadership, and late. We would plan for a night without an official show. The decree does not cover professional displays, which need a separate permit, so a private event on the river is still possible; you will see it listed if it happens.

Can you set off fireworks on Charles Bridge?

No. Amateur fireworks are banned all year on and near the river and in the historic centre, and from 2026 in all of Prague 1.

The bridge falls under three bans at once. Prague's rules have long banned amateur pyrotechnics in the protected historic reserve, on watercourses and within 50 metres of the bank, and near hospitals, care homes, the zoo and animal shelters, all year including New Year's Eve. On-the-spot fines go up to 10,000 CZK, and up to 100,000 CZK in administrative proceedings.

The new decree, approved by the city assembly on 19 June 2026, lets districts ban amateur fireworks across their whole territory. Twenty did at once, Prague 1 among them, and a September amendment raised the number to 35 of the 57 districts. Where fireworks are still allowed on New Year's Eve, the window shrinks to 17:00 on 31 December until 2:00 on 1 January; it used to cover both whole days.

None of that stopped people lighting rockets in the centre in past years, and police can only catch some of them. Expect bangs at midnight, and keep children and anyone nervous away from the thickest crowds.

What is Charles Bridge like at midnight on New Year's Eve?

Packed, loud and slow to cross: it fills before midnight and empties after 00:30, with the castle lit above.

The bridge is a favourite spot to see the new year in, which is exactly why it is hard work. Around midnight the deck is shoulder to shoulder, people stop to take photos, and crossing from one end to the other can take far longer than the usual ten minutes. There is no official viewing area and no ticket; the bridge stays open as on any other night.

In past years the city shut the roads around it rather than the bridge. For New Year 2024, Smetanovo nábřeží and Křižovnická up to Jan Palach Square closed to traffic from 23:00 to 01:00, and Josefská on the Lesser Town side from 21:00 to 02:00, because, as the city put it, the celebrations "head to Charles Bridge" around midnight (Pražský deník). The metro ran until about 2:30. Similar measures are likely again, and the 2026 details should come out in late December.

Our advice: enjoy the bridge earlier in the evening, when it is lively but moving, and pick a riverbank spot for midnight. The Smetanovo nábřeží embankment near the Old Town end, or Kampa on the Lesser Town side, both give you the bridge and the castle in one view.

What is open on 31 December and 1 January?

The bridge, the Christmas market on Old Town Square and the towers on shorter holiday hours; the 2026-27 times are not published yet.

Last season the bridge towers opened 10:00 to 16:00 on 31 December and 11:00 to 18:00 on 1 January, per the official tower page, which on 10 October 2026 still showed those 2025-26 hours. The Early Bird half-price hour does not apply on 1 January. A tower climb in the early afternoon of 31 December is a good way to see the bridge in daylight before the crowds arrive.

The Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square run to 6 January 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, so they will be standing on New Year's Eve; details are in our Christmas markets post. River cruise companies sell special New Year's Eve sailings with dinner; book early, since those boats sell out. The combined towers ticket has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, useful if the holiday hours change.

How do you get home after midnight?

On foot if you can; the metro has run until about 2:30 in past years, with extra trams and buses from 22:00 to 02:00.

For New Year 2024 the transport company extended the metro until about 2:30 and added trams and buses between 22:00 and 02:00, as the city announced at the time. Expect the same pattern, and full trains straight after midnight. Staroměstská is the nearest metro station to the bridge, about five minutes from the Old Town end, and it gets very crowded.

Taxis are scarce and expensive that night, so agree how you are getting back before you go out. Staying in the Old Town or the Lesser Town, within walking distance of the bridge, solves most of it. For the rest of the season, see Charles Bridge in autumn and winter.
